워렌 버핏이 회장으로 있는 버크셔 해서웨이는 '지주사'(holding company)이다. 지주사란 제조, 금융, 유통 등의 비즈니스를 영위하는 기업을 계열사로 두고, 이들 계열사의 배당을 주요 수익으로 영위하는 회사를 말한다.
버크셔 해서웨이의 2014년 사업보고서를 살펴보면 이 지주사는 미국 전역에 걸쳐 210여개의 계열사를 두고 있음을 알 수 있다.
